The James B. Morris Scholarship Fund will host an event on Aug. 15 to recognize student recipients and corporate sponsors. The event, titled "A Night at the Races - Racing to the Top," will take place starting at 6 p.m. at Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino. The James B. Morris Scholarship fund was established in 1978 to honor Morris, the first African-American lawyer in the Des Moines area. A number of colleges and universities have matching fund agreements, including Drake University, Grand View University, AIB College of Business, Des Moines Area Community College, Mercy College of Health Sciences and Iowa State University. Thomas Hill, senior vice president at Iowa State University, and Wannakee Carr, scholarship recipient and fourth-year medical student, will be the speakers.
