Academy Award-nominated actress, model, author and mental health activist Mariel Hemingway will present the keynote address, “I am Mariel Hemingway: This is my Story,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center at the Iowa Events Center. Sponsored by the Broadlawns Advocate Circle, this is the inaugural event in the Mental Health Begins with ME campaign, which is designed to raise awareness of mental health issues and to raise funds to expand treatment facilities in the Des Moines area. Tickets start at $27.50 and are available at www.BroadlawnsAdvocateCircle.org or by calling 515-564-8300. Granddaughter of the Nobel Prize-winning writer Ernest Hemingway, Mariel Hemingway has become a national spokesperson on mental health awareness, most recently by promoting “Running From Crazy,” a documentary written from Mariel’s perspective, about her family’s struggles with suicide, depression, alcoholism and more. Her goal is to fuel a broader, freer cultural dialogue about mental illness to bring the topic out of the shadows and into everyday conversations.
