The Ankeny Art Center introduces two new exhibitions by fine art photographer Shauna Humrich of Des Moines and Ankeny encaustic mixed-media artist Amy E. Witte. A reception for both artists will be held on Thursday, August 6th from 5-7pm. The exhibition opens to the public on August 4 and runs through September 30. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public; wine and appetizers will be served at the opening reception. Shauna Humrich's exhibit “Buildings, Bridges & Sculpture” will be featured in the main gallery. This fine art photography exhibition will feature landscapes and abstractions of iconic and historical architectural landmarks. In the side gallery, Amy E. Witte will exhibit her encaustic mixed-media exhibition titled "Word Play". Expect an evening of wine, cheese and inspiring art when you meet these two artists at our reception on Thursday, August 6th from 5-7pm at the Ankeny Art Center. Join us for STEM Day at the Iowa State Fair hosted by the Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council on August 23, 2015. The festivities begin at 9 a.m. with admission tickets to the State Fair discounted at $6 for adults ages 12+, $3 for children ages 6-11 and children under age 5 are free. Visit the State Fair’s Grand Concourse to learn about how STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) touches our lives daily and experience hands-on activities from more than 20 organizations across the state. While you’re there, don’t forget to stop by our booth in front of the Service Center to pick up your FREE drawstring backpack, say hello to the Iowa STEM operations team, and start the STEM Day at the Fair Scavenger Hunt. There will also be STEM-related performances on the MidAmerican and Knapp Stages throughout the morning. ~ The ride begins and ends in Madrid at the Flat Tire Lounge. ~ There are stops at each end of the route (Madrid is in the middle) - Whistlin' Donkey in Woodward (heading west) - Nite Hawk Bar & Grill in Slater (heading east) ~ Pedal for the House is not a race. Riders can: - Begin riding once they're registered/checked-in at Flat Tire - Start out going either direction and ride at their own pace - Complete some or all of the route and turn back at any time ~ Registration opens at noon. Silent Auction will end around 5 PM. ~ Silent Auction include gift certificates, bike gear, and more! ~ Registration fee includes a gift for the first 250 registrants. ~ Free Coca-Cola products will be available. ~ Every kid with a decorated bike will receive a McDonald’s Gift Certificate good for one free ice cream cone.

The ARL is known for pet adoptions, but we do so much more! Join us for a monthly series on hot topics in animal welfare called “Beyond Adoption”. These FREE 90 minute sessions will be geared towards ARL staff and volunteers, but are open to anyone who is interested in the topic that month. Attendees are encouraged to bring snacks to share and there will be time allotted for Q&A. The goal of the ARL Humane Education program is to promote compassion toward all living things, animal safety, and responsible pet care. In the past year and a half we have expanded our programs to include classroom programs and fosters, day camps, junior volunteer programs, and more!
