Girls' Weekend      10/19/2014 12:00:00 AM
831 42nd St, Des Moines
The ladies tell everyone they're going to Dot's weekend cabin for book club, but it becomes clear after the third case of wine comes through the door there will be more stewing than reviewing. As bottles tip up, secrets spill out and men sneak in. Girls' Weekend is a lightning-quick farce written by local theatre veteran, Karen Schaeffer. The script was a hit in the 2013-14 play reading season, and the Playhouse is excited to bring the story to life on the stage. Wednesday-Saturday shows are at 7:30 PM. Sunday shows are at 2:00 PM.
Ultimate Dinosaurs      10/19/2014 12:00:00 AM
515-274-6868 x222
401 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, Des Moines
Millions of years ago, the supercontinent Pangaea broke apart, and dinosaurs became passengers on these drifting land masses. The result? Dinosaurs with unusual - and sometimes bizarre - features that are different from the ones we know and love. Based on new, groundbreaking research from scientists around the world, Ultimate Dinosaurs reveals a new breed of dinosaurs that evolved in isolation in South America, Africa and Madagascar. From the tiny Buitreraptor to the massive Giganotosaurus (T. rex's bigger, badder cousin), Ultimate Dinosaurs is a fascinating study of species you may not have met before. See Ultimate Dinosaurs October 12, 2014, through April 12, 2015, at SCI!

Bill Schaefer & Jim Engler Exhibit      10/19/2014 12:00:00 AM
515-965-0940
1520 SW Ordnance Road, Ankeny
The Side By Side exhibit is a collaboration between two artists, one using graphite and ink drawings, one using black and white and color photos. These dual images may well lead viewers to a broader appreciation of a subject because of its being shown by more than one medium. Subjects include self-portraits, organic forms in nature, buildings and industrial settings. Thus, the 12 subjects depicted by these two techniques and two different sets of eyes are hung side by side in an exhibit of 24 pieces.

Dracula Evermore      10/25/2014 7:00:00 PM
(515) 402-7870
ArtsCentral, Waukee
Revel in the Mysteries of the Night! Dracula Evermore is an adaptation of Bram Stoker's 1897 masterpiece Gothic horror novel Dracula. The mention of Dracula conjures up images of vampires, stakes, garlic, bats... the undead. There is not a more perfect Halloween tale. The story introduces Count Dracula, tells of his move from Transylvania to England and the conflict that occurs with Professor Van Helsing and Jonathan Harker. The veil, which hides the mysteries of the night, grows thin on October evenings. We invite you to explore the boundaries and look into the reaches of imagination, fear and what lies beyond. Iowa Shakespeare Experience's professional actors will take you as far as you dare into the many themes of this tale. Single tickets are $25 Adults and $10 Children. Tickets are available by : mail, by calling 515-402-7870, at the Waukee Hardware, or, the night of the performance - based on availability

On the heels of the release of her Four Seasons: The Vivaldi Album, Avery Fisher Career Grant-winner Anne Akiko Meyers joins the Orchestra in Vivaldi’s famous and fiery Four Seasons. She has been called a “master violinist” and “passionate performer” and her sound has been described as “a tone so pure that it emerges just a few times in a generation.” Experience it live as Joseph Giunta conducts Meyers and the Orchestra through the Seasons: storms rumble and roar in Summer, and glittering pizzicato notes in the highest registers depict Winter’s icy snow. Also on the program is Verdi’s thrilling Overture to La forza del destino. The all-Italian program concludes with a different image of nature – the mighty Pines of Rome – with the sonic grandeur and orchestral force of your Des Moines Symphony raising the roof at the Civic Center! Kemin Industries, Inc. is the Guest Artist Sponsor for this program. Tickets are $15-$55 for adults, and $7.50-$27.50 for students.
