Girls' Weekend      10/26/2014 12:00:00 AM
831 42nd St, Des Moines
The ladies tell everyone they're going to Dot's weekend cabin for book club, but it becomes clear after the third case of wine comes through the door there will be more stewing than reviewing. As bottles tip up, secrets spill out and men sneak in. Girls' Weekend is a lightning-quick farce written by local theatre veteran, Karen Schaeffer. The script was a hit in the 2013-14 play reading season, and the Playhouse is excited to bring the story to life on the stage. Wednesday-Saturday shows are at 7:30 PM. Sunday shows are at 2:00 PM.
Ultimate Dinosaurs      10/26/2014 12:00:00 AM
515-274-6868 x222
401 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, Des Moines
Millions of years ago, the supercontinent Pangaea broke apart, and dinosaurs became passengers on these drifting land masses. The result? Dinosaurs with unusual - and sometimes bizarre - features that are different from the ones we know and love. Based on new, groundbreaking research from scientists around the world, Ultimate Dinosaurs reveals a new breed of dinosaurs that evolved in isolation in South America, Africa and Madagascar. From the tiny Buitreraptor to the massive Giganotosaurus (T. rex's bigger, badder cousin), Ultimate Dinosaurs is a fascinating study of species you may not have met before. See Ultimate Dinosaurs October 12, 2014, through April 12, 2015, at SCI!

Bill Schaefer & Jim Engler Exhibit      10/26/2014 12:00:00 AM
515-965-0940
1520 SW Ordnance Road, Ankeny
The Side By Side exhibit is a collaboration between two artists, one using graphite and ink drawings, one using black and white and color photos. These dual images may well lead viewers to a broader appreciation of a subject because of its being shown by more than one medium. Subjects include self-portraits, organic forms in nature, buildings and industrial settings. Thus, the 12 subjects depicted by these two techniques and two different sets of eyes are hung side by side in an exhibit of 24 pieces.

Alton Brown Live      10/29/2014 7:30:00 PM
515
221 Walnut St, Des Moines
With his upcoming tour, Alton Brown brings his brand of quirky humor and culinary-science antics to the stage. The two-hour show is a unique blend of stand up comedy, food experimentation, talk show antics, multimedia lecture, and, for the first time...live music. Audience interaction is strictly enforced throughout the evening, though if you’re called upon as a culinary assistant you’ll definitely want to take the lab coat Brown offers, as things tend to get messy. Brown has worked his weird magic on live audiences across the nation for over a decade but this is the first time he’s actually hit the road with a live tour. The entire family will have a blast, especially as you sing along with Brown’s soon to be hits “Airport Shrimp Blues” and “TV Cookin Ain’t Like No Other Cookin”.
