The Iowa Arts Council and State Historical Museum of Iowa are excited to partner together to host the exhibition “The Sum of Many Parts: 25 Quiltmakers in 21st-Century America” opening to the public on Friday, October 4. The exhibition will make its North American premiere here in Iowa, and Des Moines will be the only city in the United States to host the exhibition in its entirety. The exhibition is currently scheduled to be open through January 31, 2014 and will mark the first time it will be seen by an American audience, having spent the last year touring major cultural venues throughout China.
The exhibition features works from 25 contemporary quilters from the Midwest, the South, and Hawaii and was conceived and sponsored by the United States Embassy-Beijing and jointly developed and managed by Arts Midwest and South Arts, with additional assistance from the Great Lakes Quilt Center at Michigan State University. The exhibition will also be complemented by several Iowa quilts from the Museum collections in addition to content highlighting the unique and ongoing relationship between Iowa and China.
