The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden has hired Debra Peckumn to be its first development director.

According to a news release, Peckumn will focus on fundraising for the second phase of the Botanical Garden's capital campaign. She will also oversee membership and annual fund development initiatives. She previously served as vice president of principal gifts at the Mercy Foundation and as executive director of Civic Music Association.

"I wanted to be a part of a team that makes dreams come true for Des Moines," Peckumn said in the release.

The Botanical Garden reopened its doors on Sept. 28 after a three-month construction closure. Construction continues on phase one exterior gardens, scheduled to open next summer.

The $6.2 million "We Are a Garden Now" campaign marks the second phase of fundraising for the organization. The campaign will raise money for the development of two additional gardens and expansion of the Botanical Garden's curation and educational activities.
