Two Broadway productions that Des Moines Performing Arts has invested in, "Kinky Boots" and "Pippin," were big winners at the 67th Annual Tony Awards yesterday, the organization announced. "Kinky Boots," a new musical by Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fierstein, topped the list of winners with six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The new production of "Pippin" captured four Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical. As a member of the Independent Presenters Network, Des Moines Performing Arts invested about $25,000 in each of the two productions, said Cindy Hughes Anliker, communications manager. The organization has also invested in a half-dozen other productions, among them "La Cage Aux Folles," "Legally Blonde" and "9 to 5." The investments have given Des Moines "a big leg up" in landing a number of the shows during their initial national tours, Hughes Anliker said.
