Walking between vendors eating fried food on a stick may be the most popular activity at the Iowa State Fair, so this year, the Healthiest State Initiative is offering fairgoers free fitness classes and a tool to find healthier food alternatives. The Healthiest State Initiative's Fitness on the Hill will offer a range of 30-minute fitness classes, from boot camp workouts, tai chi, yoga and Zumba, on Expo Hill every day at 9:30 a.m. beginning Friday, Aug. 8. Fairgoers can show up for classes with no sign-up necessary. Visit the fair's website for more information and a daily class schedule. Additionally, fairgoers can find healthier food options at the fair with the Healthy Fare Food Finder app. The app, developed by The Des Moines Register and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, can even calculate how far you'll have to walk to burn the calories consumed at the fair.
