Youth Emergency Services & Shelter will hold an official groundbreaking ceremony at 4 p.m. today for its expansion. The project, which nearly doubles the emergency shelter's space, will be funded through a $3.76 million capital campaign announced earlier this year. The new 19,000-square-foot space will include 32 single bedrooms designed for children healing from especially difficult traumatic experiences. The upper level of the addition will house four new classrooms, a library, a music therapy studio, art therapy space, counseling rooms and recreational space. Project completion is expected in February 2015. The largest youth shelter and the only crisis nursery of its kind in the state of Iowa, YESS serves more than 1,000 children each year with emergency shelter, respite, crisis care and counseling services. "With YESS' projected growth, it is the hope that we will no longer have to turn children away who are in need of emergency shelter or crisis intervention and counseling services," said Stephen Quirk, CEO of YESS. The shelter is located at 918 S.E. 11th St. in Des Moines.
