Residential construction activity for the year continues to outpace year-ago totals, with apartment buildings and townhouses leading the way, according to figures released today by the Home Builders Association of Greater Des Moines. Builders took out 526 permits for all residential construction last month, up from 317 in June 2013. Through the end of June, 2,584 permits had been issued for all residential construction, compared with 1,955 for the first six months of last year. Single-family construction is down 17 percent from last year, with 1,108 permits through June, compared with 1,194 in the first six months of 2013. Builders have taken out permits for 1,221 apartment units, up from 505 last year, and 345 townhouse units, up from 256.
