An Iowa State University alumnus and Des Moines Public Schools employee has been selected to compete in CNN's Fit Nation Triathlon Challenge. Connie Sievers, the district's health curriculum coordinator for the Career and Tech Ed Institute at Central Campus, is one of six people selected from hundreds nationwide to compete in the challenge, with the goal of completing the Nautica Malibu Triathlon on Sept. 14. The Winterset resident began training last September after being motivated by her family to make a change in her lifestyle. Eighteen years ago, her 6-year-old daughter died from leukemia, sending her into a depression. She gained 70 pounds and has been unable to shake the extra weight since then. She made the decision to enter the triathlon after seeing her children participate in Iowa's Best Dam Triathlon. "I've never had the backing that I do now and I feel as though I will be successful," she said. Click here to view a video about Sievers.
