CenturyLink Inc. announced that it will accept $54 million from the Federal Communications Commission's Connect America Fund this year to bring broadband to more than 92,000 rural homes and businesses in unserved high-cost areas. In Iowa, the company will use $528,000 of the FCC funding to provide just under 1,000 rural households and businesses with broadband access for the first time, a CenturyLink spokesman said. Last year, CenturyLink used $2 million in federal money to upgrade 2,500 rural Iowa homes and businesses. The company said its own capital investment in broadband upgrades for rural customers in 33 states over the next three years will exceed the $54 million in federal money it received.
