A Connecticut-based discount membership club operator will pay Iowa consumers more than $5 million as part of a $6.2 million settlement with the state to resolve allegations that the company misled Iowa consumers into signing up and paying for discount club and membership programs through supposed "free trials." Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller announced the agreement with Affinion Group Inc. and its subsidiaries, Trilegiant Corp. and Webloyalty.com Inc., through a court order and a separate written agreement with the Consumer Protection Division. The court order is part of a $30 million settlement with 47 states and the District of Columbia concerning general consumer fraud issues. Iowans who believe Affinion, Trilegiant, or Webloyalty.com owe them refunds can file consumer complaints with the state Consumer Protection Division at www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov.
