Greater Des Moines ranks as the No. 2 area in the country for doctors' practices, outranked only by the Sarasota metropolitan area on Florida's Gulf Coast, according to an analysis by consumer finance website ValuePenguin. Using a combination of factors that included salaries, employment concentration of the profession and cost of living, ValuePenguin rated the best metro areas in which to hang a shingle. Greater Des Moines' amenities were an important factor for its high ranking. "After work, doctors practicing here can unwind on trails, lakes, water sports, wineries, and breweries," the site gushed. "Perhaps they'll even be able to resist the lure of the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival as well!" Physicians' salaries in Greater Des Moines averaged $224,930, compared with a national average of $179,651, according to the analysis.
