Iowa ranks 35th in the nation in the average cost to close on the purchase of a home, according to a survey conducted by financial information website Bankrate.com. The average Iowa expense to close on a $200,000 mortgage with a 20 percent down payment was $2,448, which represents origination and third-party fees. That figure does not include taxes, title fees, property insurance, association fees, interest and other prepaid items. Across the nation, the average closing cost was $2,539. Texas was the most expensive at $3,046, and Nevada was the least expensive at $2,265. Overall, closing costs have risen 6 percent over the past year, according to a release.
