Getting healthier looks like a lot of fun.
On Saturday, Life Time Athletic Des Moines opens its long-awaited 166,000-square-foot fitness destination at 11911 Hickman Road in Urbandale.
Entering the $30 million "total lifestyle center," Life Time's first Iowa location, is much like entering a grand resort with polished marble staircases that lead to indoor and outdoor aquatic centers, an indoor tennis center with eight climate-controlled courts, not to mention group fitness, cycle, Pilates and yoga studios and hundreds of cardiovascular and resistance machines.
The LifeSpa will offer lavish day spa services that will be available to both members and nonmembers; the LifeCafe will offer a wide range of fresh and healthful food items. The Life Time Kids Academy, designed for children ages 3 months to 11 years old, will provide more than 90 classes weekly ranging from karate, yoga and tumbling to music, Spanish and arts and crafts.
"What's great about this community for us is that it's growing," said Jeff Zwiefel, Life Time's chief operating officer, who was at the club on Thursday for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. "There is a tremendous amount of consciousness in the community about a healthy lifestyle."
The facility is intended to a "one-stop shop" for fitness, offering every type of amenity and program that people will want in one location, he said. "We know that as the early adopters who have joined tell others about the club, it will become the talk of the town," he said.
The Urbandale center, which will employ a staff of nearly 300, is the 111thfacility to be opened by Life Time Fitness Inc., which opened its first center in 1992 and became a publicly traded company in 2004. Based in Chanhassen, Minn., Life Time brought in over $1.2 billion in revenues last year and employs more than 22,500 people.
Certified fitness trainers and nutrition coaches will offer members personalized programs that will complement more than 100 group fitness classes to be offered weekly. In addition to programs offered within the facility, many outdoor club activities will be offered, such as bicycling and running clubs.
Life Time will also offer customized corporate wellness programs for Greater Des Moines businesses of all sizes through its Total Health Division.
Club memberships range from $72 per month for a single membership to $192 monthly for a four-person membership.
