AMR-US Airways deal opposed by U.S. in antitrust suit
Bloomberg reports that the federal government says that American Airlines' merger with US Airways Group Inc. should be blocked. Government officials have filed an antitrust suit that opposes American's plans to exit bankruptcy through a deal that would create the world's biggest airline. The proposed tie-up would lead to less competition in the industry and higher prices for consumers, according to a complaint filed in Washington federal court.
Nasdaq to take on greater policing role on its stock exchange
Reuters reports that Nasdaq OMX Group Inc. plans to assume a greater role in the policing of its U.S. stock exchange, according to a regulatory filing. The move follows calls by Wall Street for an end to the self-regulatory status of exchanges.
U.S. producer prices flat in July, point to little inflation pressure
Reuters reports that U.S. producer prices were flat in July,pointing to very little inflationary pressure in the economy. The Federal Reserve last month raised concerns about low inflation because of the risk that it could spiral into deflation.
