Mary Connell, president and CEO of Air Control Inc. in Clinton, was named Iowa Small Business Person of the Year. Connell has led the family-owned heating and cooling company since her father retired in 1989, and in that time has grown the business from $1 million in sales to more than $8 million, and expanded its product line into five divisions with 40 full-time employees.

Connell will represent Iowa at National Small Business Week ceremonies May 15-16 in Washington, D.C., where she will compete for the national award.

The Small Business Exporter of the Year is Adel-based Kuder Inc. The education and career planning company recently increased its focus on the growing need for evidence-based career guidance abroad. Kuder has secured multiyear government contracts with Qatar, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, and is working with government agencies and private organizations in Ireland, Morocco, Peru, Rwanda and South Korea.

The North Central Iowa Small Business Development Center in Fort Dodge received the Small Business Development Center Excellence and Innovation Award. The center, which serves a 10-county region with a staff of just two people, last year counseled 236 clients and is on track to serve 300 clients this year.
