A California-based online company that operates a sports activities and fitness website and sells memberships for merchandise and services discounts has agreed to pay refunds to Iowans and change its marketing practices, Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller announced Friday. The Active Network Inc. of San Diego, which operates Active.com, will pay more than $237,000 in refunds to Iowans who had been charged for membership programs. The company allegedly enrolled customers who used its online registration service for sports programs in a membership program without their consent. More than 9,500 Iowa residents paid at least one $59.95 membership charge; unknowing customers who didn't challenge the charge were billed year after year. In addition to the refunds, the agreement

requires the company, which denied liability, to pay a $15,000 penalty.
