In honor of National Fire Prevention Week, the American Red Cross is in need of local volunteers when it teams up next week with firefighters for the Highland Park Smoke Alarm Blitz. On Saturday, Oct. 12, volunteers will go door-to-door in Des Moines' Highland Park neighborhood to help the Red Cross install smoke alarms and replace batteries in existing ones. According to Kara Kelly of the American Red Cross, several local businesses have already pitched in financially or by promising volunteers, including Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co., Principal Financial Group Inc., Casey's General Stores Inc. and The Iowa Clinic. Anyone interested in forming a team or lending a hand can register online.
