The Waukee City Council has approved a plan that will slash permit fees on residential construction. On a nearly $300,000 home, the new fees, effective Jan. 1, will drop to $2,832 from $5,097. Waukee had held the distinction of having the highest building permit fee in Greater Des Moines. In order to achieve some savings on fees, the city will eliminate a $495 gas meter charge and slash its sewer connection fee to $600 from $2,370. The council had voted earlier this year to approve reductions, but withheld a final vote pending a study on the impact of the fee reductions on costs to current residents.
