The YMCA of Greater Des Moines gave community service awards to four people during its annual dinner Monday. Chuck and Ellen Corwin of Urbandale received the Service to Youth award. Mike Carver and Jeanne Nesbit received the Service to Community award. Chuck and Ellen Corwin are long-time YMCA members and have been involved in a number of volunteer activities. Chuck's association with the YMCA began when he learned to swim as a child in the old YMCA building at 4th Avenue and Keosauqua Way in downtown Des Moines. He has served on the YMCA's Healthy Living Center board in Clive and Heritage Club. Ellen Corwin has been on both the Riverfront YMCA board, where she was involved with that branch's Red Flannel Run for several years, and the Metro Board, where she helped update the Y's strategic plan. Carver and Nesbit were recognized for their work with the YMCA Fatherhood Initiative. They served together on a Governor's Responsible Fatherhood Task Force in 2001. The two helped form the Polk County Fathers and Families Coalition. That ultimately led to partnering with the YMCA in 2007 to launch the Fatherhood Initiative program at the John R. Grubb Community YMCA, a program that continues to this date.
