Iowa businesses and communities have a new way to show their support for hiring veterans, Gov. Terry Branstad announced this morning. As part of the Home Base Iowa initiative announced three weeks ago, companies can participate as a Home Base Iowa Business. To receive that designation, companies must pledge to hire a specific number of veterans, post their jobs on the Home Base Iowa website that's under development and become members of the Skilled Iowa program. Communities that achieve at least 10 percent business participation and meet other requirements can be designated a Home Base Iowa Community. Although the initiative has not yet spent any money on marketing or advertising, it has already resulted in dozens of calls and correspondence from out-of-state veterans interested in calling Iowa home, and a number have already been placed in jobs, Branstad said in a release.
