The Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau and Des Moines Area Sports Commission were unsuccessful in their bid to host the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials here in Des Moines.
But the tourism group is refocusing its efforts to bring the trials to the city in 2020. The 2016 trials will take place in Eugene, OR. “We know what we need to do in order to gain further traction in hosting the U.S. Olympic Trials,” said Greg Edwards, the organization’s president and CEO, in a release.
Edwards encouraged Greater Des Moines residents to attend the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Drake Stadium on June 19-23 and to support the 20 Olympic medalists competing.
“The same individuals running this event are the individuals involved in making Olympic Trials decisions," he said. "We believe Des Moines is still in the running for 2020 and beyond.”
