Iowa is the 13th best state for military retirees, according to a ranking compiled by financial resource social media site WalletHub. The report compares the 50 states and Washington, D.C., using 19 key metrics, including taxes on military benefits and veteran job opportunities. Iowa was helped by coming in at No. 4 in the lowest percentage of homeless veterans per number of veterans. However, the state was No. 24 in veteran job opportunities and No. 33 in veteran-owned businesses per 1,000 inhabitants. Gov. Terry Branstad launched the Home Base Iowa initiative late last year to make the state a destination for veterans who want jobs. The initiative will be signed into law on Memorial Day, Branstad announced today. No. 1 on the WalletHub list is Wyoming. Nebraska is No.  5 and Kansas is No. 8.
