Iowa's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 3.3 percent in January, lower than last January's 3.8 percent and December's 3.5 percent. Nationally, the unemployment rate rose to 4.8 percent in January 2017. "Following a volatile year's end to 2016, the Iowa economy began 2017 on a much stronger note," Beth Townsend, director of Iowa Workforce Development, said in a statement. Iowa employers added 9,900 jobs, she added. "Hiring was particularly strong in professional and business services as well as the leisure and hospitality industries." See county-by-county figures.
