The pursuit of happiness in the Iowa
outdoors generates $6.1 billion in spending a year, supports 75,000 jobs that
pay $1.7 billion in wages annually, and produces $433 million in state and
local tax revenue, according to a report from the Outdoor Industry Association,
a Colorado-based trade organization. The state-by-state figures expand upon a
national report the association published last year that said $646 billion is
spent each year on outdoor recreation, supporting 6.1 million jobs and
generating nearly $80 billion in tax revenue. "Americans spend almost
twice as much on outdoor recreation as they spend on pharmaceuticals each year.
And outdoor recreation supports more than twice as many jobs as the oil and gas
industry," according to a news release.
