Iowa's unemployment rate for January edged up to 4.3 percent from 4.2 percent in December, but that's still down from the 5 percent rate in January 2013, Iowa Workforce Development said today. Director Teresa Wahlert said in a release that Iowa had the fifth-lowest average unemployment rate in the nation last year at 4.6 percent. The number of unemployed increased to 71,700 in January from 71,000 in December. The total number of people working was slightly more than 1.6 million. Layoffs in trade, transportation and construction contributed to the decline in employment in January.
