Four Iowa utilities are among 11 utilities or communities that will receive renewable electricity from a new landfill gas-fueled project near Mitchellville.
Indianola Municipal Utilities (IMU), the city of Carlisle, the city of Sergeant Bluff and Waverly Light and Power signed environmental attributes agreements with their wholesale electric supplier, the Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska (MEAN) for a portion of the energy output from the project.
MEAN signed a power purchase agreement for six megawatts from the generating facility, which will be constructed, owned and operated by WM Renewable Energy LLC.
The project at the Metro Park East Landfill, operated by the Metro Waste Authority, is located east of Mitchellville and is expected to go online this fall. Communities in Colorado and Nebraska will also participate.
