Through its Trees Please! energy efficiency program, MidAmerican Energy Co. has awarded $219,000 to 75 cities and community organizations throughout its Iowa service territory, the Des Moines-based utility announced. The grants, which include $20,000 to the city of Des Moines as well as at least $1,000 to several other Greater Des Moines communities, are based on the individual merits of the project, the benefit to the community and the ability to obtain matching funds, the company said. In addition to beautifying areas and improving air and soil quality, trees improve energy efficiency by serving as natural windbreaks and providing shade to homes and businesses.
