Nearly one-quarter of respondents to a survey of Iowa credit union members have student loan debt, and 24 percent of those members say they are not on track to pay it back, according to results released today by the Iowa Credit Union League. Of 936 respondents to the survey, nearly 25 percent said they owe between $10,000 and $20,000, and 38 percent owe more than $20,000. Nationwide, the student debt load is estimated at $986 billion, and a recent study by TransUnion found that more than half of all student loans are now delinquent or in deferral. Falling behind on student loan payments can damage a person's credit, so current students should consider the long-term ramifications of borrowing, said Emily Caropreso, director of communications and marketing for the Iowa Credit Union League.
