Seventy-five years ago this month, baseball great Lou Gehrig delivered his famous retirement speech after being diagnosed with the fatal disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

At its July 11 game, the Iowa Cubs will host ALS Cubs Night to help Iowans with ALS and the Iowa chapter of the ALS Association raise money to fight Lou Gehrig's disease. For each $7 ticket sold through the association, $5 will be donated to the Des Moines Walk to Defeat ALS.

Also, during the game two original pieces of art featuring Lou Gehrig and the Des Moines skyline by Leighton Autrey will be on display. The artwork will be available for purchase at an event later this year to raise money for ALS research.

Game tickets must be purchased through the association's Iowa chapter for the donation. To purchase game tickets, contact Taylor Veenstra at 515-369-2572 or email taylor@alsaiowa.org.
