The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Wednesday the opening of a second round of Health Care Innovation Award funding through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Nearly $1 billion in grant funding is available through the program, which last year awarded 107 grants to health care organizations across the country. In 2012, the University of Iowa received a $7.66 million Health Care Innovation Award for an initiative to improve coordination of care at 11 critical access hospitals in 10 rural counties in Iowa.
