Health insurers will be allowed to continue transitional policies through 2018, under an extension announced by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The Iowa Insurance Division indicated it will allow this extension, which applies to more than 115,000 individual and small business policyholders, Iowa Insurance Commissioner Doug Ommen said in a release Friday. "This is welcome news from CMS for those Iowans that like their plan and will help provide some stability for them going into 2018," Ommen said. Specifically, states may permit issuers that have renewed policies under the transitional policy continually since 2014 to renew such coverage for a policy year starting on or before Oct. 1, 2018. However, any policies renewed under this transitional policy must not extend past Dec. 31, 2018.
