The Iowa Index, an unweighted average price of 23 Iowa-based public companies, rose 1.9 percent in February, significantly below the 4.8 percent gain for the Dow Jones industrial average. Nasdaq was up 3.8 percent.
Among the top gainers was NewLink Genetics Corp., which rode good news on its vaccine development to gain 29 percent. Also gaining more than 10 percent were Arts Way Manufacturing Co., Workiva Inc., KemPharm Inc., American Equity Investment Life Holding, Green Plains Renewable Energy Inc., Fidelity & Guaranty Life and Athene Holding Ltd.
However, NewLink was 25 percent below its February 2016 level, and American Equity was down 75 percent in the same period. On the upside, Green Plains was up 98 percent in February vs. February 2016.
All but 14 of the stocks in the index were up in February compared with the month before. The biggest loser was Lee Enterprises Inc., down 16 percent. Dice Holdings Inc. and United Fire Group Inc. also lost more than 10 percent from January to February.
