Gov. Terry Branstad today launched a new public-private partnership designed to match military veterans with open job positions in the state.
The initiative, called Home Base Iowa, will be chaired by Congressman Leonard Boswell and Casey's General Stores CEO Bob Myers. It will raise private funds to support national targeted marketing efforts to veterans.
"We'll be calling upon the business community to partner with Home Base Iowa to help us meet our goals of increasing employment in this state, decreasing veterans' unemployment, and recruiting high quality individuals to Iowa," Branstad said in a press release.
He noted that he repeatedly hears from state employers that they are ready to hire, pointing to what is often referred to as the skills gap.
Several hundred thousand veterans will leave the service over the next few years, the governor's office said.
