Iowa's unemployment rate fell to a post-recession low of 4.2 percent in December, down from 4.3 percent in November and 5.0 percent the same month a year ago, according to numbers released by Iowa Workforce Development today. The annual unemployment rate for Iowa for 2013 was 4.7 percent. Statewide, the total number of unemployed persons dropped to 70,200 in December, its lowest level for the year and down from 81,700 a year ago. The total number of working Iowans increased to 1.6 million in December, up by more than 53,000 a year ago. The December unemployment rate in the Des Moines-West Des Moines metropolitan statistical area was 4.4 percent, down from 5.2 percent a year ago.
