To Scott Bowman, few sounds are better than that of a hand sorting through a pile of Lego bricks. “It just takes you back to when you were a kid,” he said.
A mechanical engineer, Bowman and his friend Chris Hettinger recently turned 60,000 Lego bricks into a scale model of the Science Center of Iowa. The self-taught Lego enthusiast has created things out of the multicolored bricks since he was a kid. “I never really stopped,” he said. “When I moved, they came with me.” Bowman said he was completely unaware of the Lego fan subculture until last summer when he attended Brickworld, an annual Lego convention in Chicago. “It’s a huge community,” he said. “People are building everything.” Including one New York woman who constructed Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the fictional school in the Harry Potter series.
