Rob Whitehead, an assistant professor of architecture at Iowa State University, has received a top award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture for a curriculum that stresses a hands-on approach to solving issues in structural design. Whitehead received the group's Creative Achievement award for his "Think, Make, Break + Evaluate" methodology, which rejects abstract diagrams and formulas in favor of testing structures made from their bodies, sticks and Skittles, among other materials, and helps students gain a better understanding of the ingredients in sustainability. "I hope the objects they have made and broken throughout the years have given them insight well beyond a textbook and set of calculations," Whitehead said in a news release.
