Greater Des Moines has another first to boast about. The website NerdWallet says we rank No. 1 among medium-sized metropolitan areas for home ownership. Researchers used U.S. Census data to determine home ownership rates, the costs of owning a home, median household income and population change. According to the study, 71.5 percent of the Greater Des Moines population owns a home and spends 27.6 percent of median household income to pay the bills. "Des Moines' low cost of living not only draws homeowners to the area, but also attracts many large employers in the financial services and technology industries," according to the study. Greater Des Moines edged out the Ogden-Clearfield, Utah, metro area for the top spot.
