A total of 9,640 people in the Des Moines metropolitan area worked in a foreign-owned establishment as of 2011, according to a report released today by the Brookings Institution. That number was up from 5,900 in 1991. The share of total private employment in foreign-owned establishments was 3.4 percent in 2011. Des Moines ranked 78th among the top 100 metro areas in 2011. That's one spot down from its 1991 rank of No. 77. Statewide, 49,470 of Iowans work win foreign-owned establishments, which is 3.7 percent of total private employment. In Des Moines, data processing and hosting is the industry with the most jobs in foreign-owned establishments. A foreign-owned establishment is defined as a place of business belonging to a foreign-parent company.
