State begins using Google tool to detect unemployment fraud

Iowa Workforce Development announced it has begun using a new unemployment insurance fraud detection system. The new system, which became operational this month, was developed in partnership with Pondera Solutions, a Google Enterprise Partner. The system uses Google analytical tools to detect and prevent improper unemployment insurance claims and state unemployment tax avoidance schemes by employers. Iowa Workforce Development received a $550,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor in July 2013 to develop and implement the investigative tool. Once potential cases are identified and investigated, hearings will be held to provide due process prior to benefits ceasing for an individual or the closure of an employee account. Spokeswoman Kerry Koonce said the new system has already generated more than 300 cases to be investigated, so the agency will need to hire more fraud investigators.
