A Des Moines woman has made the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s list of the top 50 donors of 2022. Harriett Macomber was listed at No. 45 on the list, which is topped by Bill Gates, followed by Michael Bloomberg and Warren Buffet. According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, Macomber donated $45 million in 2022 to create endowments for eight nonprofits through the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines. The endowments set up support for the Business Women’s Association Foundation, the Des Moines Art Center, Des Moines Symphony, Drake University Law School, Orchard Place, St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral, United Way of Central Iowa, and the YMCA of Greater Des Moines. Macomber and her late husband, Locke, were longtime supporters of the organizations throughout their lifetimes. Macomber was 93 when she died in 2020.
