As a senior preconstruction manager for Ryan Cos., the Iowa native spends his days working through the initial planning and design stages of large-scale development projects.
With so many factors to consider on any given project, Moffitt understands the importance of meshing a project’s design with customers’ expectations.
And at 32, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional has won the reputation of being the youngest Ryan employee to take on such a role, which includes managing the budgets, schedules, procurement and cost management associated with big initiatives.
“We want each customer to go back and tell their contacts that they like to work with Ryan and would do it again,” he said.
Moffitt refers to Ryan and its leaders as role models that exemplify the values he personally holds dear, such as integrity and customer focus. He said his father has also influenced him to work hard and take advantage of opportunities.
On a broader level, Moffitt points to his faith as the overarching reason to keep learning from successes, as well as from failures.
“Good judgment comes from experience and experience comes from bad judgment,” he said. “Everybody needs a reason why, a source of motivation to do a good job and work hard.”
He also realizes that it’s better to identify a couple of things that are important and then try to make a difference, rather than spreading oneself too thin.
When he is not helping his employer wade through a tough economy, you may find Moffitt organizing a food or clothing drive, serving hot meals at Hope Ministries or being involved with his Ankeny church.
Another priority for Moffitt is his family: wife Jenica; 7-year-old daughter, Leyla; and 5-year-old twins, Caden and Chloe.
“We really enjoy the community of Des Moines,” Moffitt said. “We have a lot of friends and family here.”
Moffitt is a member of the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute class of 2008-2009.
In 2003, he earned a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Colorado, graduating with a 3.9 grade point average.
