But her commitment to the community and passion for assisting those in need make her a star to everyone she works with.
“Donni is simply a person who understands that she has the skills, personality and zeal to have a positive impact on the community,” wrote Brett Ridge, CEO of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Iowa. During the past two years as that charity’s gala co-chair, Alley has helped raise between $250,000 and $300,000 for the organization, Ridge said.
Alley, a 1995 graduate of Simpson College who currently serves as president of the college’s alumni board of directors and on Simpson’s board of trustees, “truly exemplifies the spirit of service we seek to develop in each student,” wrote Simpson President John Byrd.
“From raising money to grant the wishes of seriously ill children to improving local sustainability efforts, her engaging personality makes her an asset to any group to which she lends a hand,” Byrd wrote.
Alley said Simpson is where she and her husband, Chad, a 2007 Forty Under 40 class member, “really learned the value of philanthropy. … I’ve learned that I am most alive when I am giving back. That’s something that Simpson integrates into you, that sense of service leadership,” she said.
In the community, Alley has decorated for the Festival of Trees & Lights event, served as an industry leader for the Business Horizons program for high school students and volunteered for Central Iowa Shelter & Services, among many other activities.
Alley previously worked as art director and production director for Meredith Interactive, where she oversaw design and usability for the Web sites for Better Homes and Garden, Ladies’ Home Journal, American Baby, Family Circle and other publications.
In 2007 she launched Alley Design Solutions Inc., and has attracted clients such as Anderson Erickson Dairy, Court Avenue Restaurant and Brewing Co. and Heartland Finishes Inc.
“I did it after meeting with a career counselor who helped me identify my values – creativity, excellence, leadership, integrity and life balance,” she said. “So I’ve been able to satisfy that entrepreneurism within me, but at the same time have time to give back to my community and family.”
Alley and her husband have a 1-year-old son, Cameron.
