And what that means is that when community organizations need a hand, Engebrecht is ready to help out.

Engebrecht is “never more than a phone call or text message from those who need his advice,” wrote Lou Ann Simpson, director of Drake University’s School of Accounting and faculty adviser to the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Engebrecht was a member of the fraternity while a student at Drake and he is a graduate adviser to its members.

“He is able to strike that delicate balance of providing assistance and guidance while encouraging others to participate and assume responsibility,” Simpson said. “Drew is definitely a team player who can also step up to lead, when appropriate.”

Engebrecht was involved in establishing the Des Moines Kiwanis Club’s Miracle League and helped teach baseball skills to some of its physically and mentally challenged participants. He is involved in fund raising for the YMCA of Greater Des Moines. He is a graduate of the Greater Des Moines Partnership’s Leadership Institute, and he is president-elect of the Rotary Club of Greater Des Moines.

“He is making great things happen in Des Moines,” wrote Scott Harris, executive director of the Riverfront YMCA, who went on to note that Engebrecht is involved in a YMCA program that helps raise funds to cover membership costs for children from families with limited incomes.

“I do like to give back to places and organizations that have had an impact on me,” Engebrecht said. “Des Moines is great because it gives you opportunities.”

His employer, Holmes Murphy & Associates Inc., has provided a culture that encourages personal growth, he said, and part of that growth occurs through involvement in the community.

“I’ve had a really good life. I haven’t had anything really major impact my life, but there are a lot of people who have,” he said. “Just to be able to help out in some small way, I love to do that.”
