He is chairman of Make-A-Wish Foundation of Iowa, where he has been a member of the board since 2005; he is a United Way of Central Iowa Emerging Leader and a member of Faith Lutheran Church, where he has taught Sunday school. He has coached tee ball and participates in the Dam to Dam Run. He is a former chair of Iowa State University’s alumni organization.

Jay and his wife, Anne, provide financial and volunteer support to United Way of Central Iowa, Chrysalis Foundation, Children and Families of Iowa, John Stoddard Cancer Center and the Alzheimer’s Association. The Fogartys have two children: Connor, 5, and Nora, 2.

Fogarty grew up in St. Louis, though his family had connections to Des Moines. Anne is a Des Moines native.

Fogarty said that after graduating from Iowa State University with a degree in mechanical engineering, he thought he would leave Iowa and never return.

However, the prospect of raising children in big cities prompted him and Anne to return to the area, and they began looking for ways to get involved in the community.

“When we started talking about raising a family, we wanted to be closer to home, and Des Moines hit the top of the list,” he said. “After getting back here, we started talking about how do we want to give back to the community. We learned that from our parents. I think it’s just been part of what we do and what we were raised to do.”

After receiving an M.B.A. degree from the University of Iowa, Fogarty looked for organizations where he could pair his skills in finance and computer systems.

“Nonprofit boards just kind of jumped out,” he said.

At Principal Financial Group Inc., Fogarty led a 35,000-hour project to upgrade the company’s payroll system, has rolled out human resources systems across the globe and helped open an office in India.

“It’s good to be busy,” he said.
