He worked as a credit analyst at The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi and earned an M.B.A. in finance at Loyola University, but life among the skyscrapers “got old after a while,” he said. “We knew we didn’t want to live there forever.”

Since arriving, Sorrel has handled a number of important assignments at ING, including developing a business continuity plan, leading money-saving Six Sigma projects and heading up a team that handled the transfer of nearly 50,000 accounts to ING in 2008 alone.

He has received the ING Circle of Honor award, one of the company’s highest honors.

At the same time, the suburban Chicago native has contributed to the community by participating in organizations such as Toastmasters Club, Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity, Young Professionals Connection and Special Olympics Iowa.

“One of my goals is to get on the Special Olympics Iowa board,” Sorrel said. He has served as a West Central regional board member since 2006. Special Olympics is devoted to sports for people with intellectual disabilities.

“I like sports,” Sorrel said, “and I found a way to use that passion and be able to hopefully help benefit others.”

In his Special Olympics role, he has served as a referee and volunteer for a number of Central Iowa events.

Sorrel also served as head of the ING Community Partners committee, supporting the volunteer efforts of the local office’s 1,200 employees.

His experience with Toastmasters, including two stints as club president, “has given me more confidence in public speaking and presentation,” Sorrel said. “It has helped as far as being able think on your feet.”

He was selected for the Leadership Iowa Class of 2007-2008. That group partnered with Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity to build the first “green” Habitat house in the state.

Sorrel is also a serious runner, and has finished in the top 10 percent of marathons in New York and Chicago. An 18-month-old son, Grant, has changed the family’s lifestyle, but Sorrel said, “Running is something I will continue to do; hopefully I’ll get back into marathons someday.”
