Over the past six years, Anderson has led two home-care services companies, Ultimate Nursing Services and Universal Pediatric Services Inc., to significant growth. The two businesses which together employ more than 1,000 nurses in six states, have been ranked on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing U.S. companies.

He has also played a key role in helping the American Cancer Society raise more than $600,000 over the past three years through the organization’s Coaches vs. Cancer events, which include a charity golf classic and the Hoops for Hope Gala.

“I would term him my ‘silent giant,'” said Julie Kiefer, premier events coordinator for the American Cancer Society’s Iowa region. “He does things so quietly and effectively. He’s amazing; he just gets it done, and he cares.” As the sponsorship chairman for Hoops for Hope, Anderson increased the event’s sponsorships by 80 percent, she said.

The organization recently selected Anderson as one of nine CEOs from across the state to serve on the American Cancer Society Coaches vs. Cancer Board of Ambassadors. They have committed their personal fund-raising support, as well as championing the cause through wellness and screening programs within their companies.

“So they’re like the coaches, to educate the public as well as patients and their families about resources,” Kiefer said.

Another of Anderson’s favorite volunteer activities is Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa. “That’s neat for me because I don’t have children of my own, so it’s an opportunity for me to learn how to interact with children,” he said. He takes his 7-year-old “little brother” out every other week for adventures that range from a night of pizza and electronic games to an Iowa State University basketball game.

Anderson became CEO of the home-care companies that his mother, Connie Freeman, founded 25 years ago. He joined the companies in 2001 as marketing director and worked his way up to president by the time he was 29. Under his leadership, the companies’ combined revenues have grown from $6 million to $16.5 million last year.
