The 2010 World Food Prize conference runs Tuesday through Friday at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown, opening with the Iowa Hunger Summit and concluding with a Laureate Luncheon.

David Beckman, president of Bread for the World, and Jo Luck, CEO of Heifer International, will be honored as this year’s World Food Prize recipients at a ceremony at 7 p.m. Friday at the Iowa State Capitol.

The late Norman Borlaug founded the World Food Prize in 1986. Borlaug was an Iowa native who received a Nobel Prize for his role in the “Green Revolution,” which boosted crop yields around the world and saved an estimated 1 billion lives.

In 1990, the late Des Moines businessman John Ruan provided a $10 million endowment to continue the World Food Prize.
