2023 commercial building permits

156 permits were issued for new projects in the Greater Des Moines area

In 2023, the valuation of commercial building permits issued for new projects in the Greater Des Moines area exceeded $1.8 billion, a total boosted by permits issued for three data centers in Microsoft Corp.’s data farms in West Des Moines, a review shows.

Microsoft added data centers at its Ginger East, Ginger West and Osmium campuses, accounting for 57%, or $1,043,300,000 of the value of the permits issued for new commercial projects in 2023. (The Business Record reviews commercial building permits issued in 13 cities and Polk County.)

Other permits issued for new commercial projects in 2023 include a new Target store in Waukee, TopGolf and Bombers entertainment venues, 13 multifamily projects and three hotels.

In all, 2023 saw 156 building permits issued for new commercial projects in the Des Moines area. The following are the 10 projects with the highest building permit values:
